Kevin’s career in sound engineering and performance stems from the thriving music and theatre scene of Canberra in the 80s and 90s. Moving to Woolongong, Kevin worked at the Entertainment Centre before commencing as Head of Sound at Sydney Theatre Company. Throughout this time, he has maintained experiments using recycled materials to create music, including deconstructed pianos, horns and kitchen sinks to explore the visualisation of sound. These days, in his workshop Kevin creates robotic animated puppets to perform in quasi- virtual worlds.
Ernst Chladni, a German musician and physicist, was known as the father of acoustics for his work on the visual patterns caused by the resonance of vibrating metal plates. When 'played' with a bow, sand scattered on the plates forms into regions and lines. Kevin explores the effects of dye and sand on metal plates to produce artworks and innovative soundscapes.
Splinters was a performance arts troupe formed in Canberra by a collective of writers, musicians and visual artists. Using techniques of theatre, dance, puppetry, pyrotechnics, sculpture, music and crowd manipulation, Splinters performed one-off spectacular events, seasonal shows, exhibitions, and large outdoor events. Cathedral of Flesh won the Best Promenade Theatre Performance Award at the Adelaide Fringe Festival in 1992.
